Introduction
One of the most crucial natural environments for the health and stability of landscape hydrology are wetlands. These ecosystems often host the highest density of wildlife and biodiversity when they are healthy and functioning well. Unfortunately, wetlands are highly endangered, frequently targeted for drainage and infill to make way for cultivation. However, recovering and rebuilding wetlands is not only possible but can also be an affordable and context-appropriate way of regenerating the health of entire water catchments.
In the latest episode of the Regenerative Skills Podcast, Wetland Restoration and Training LLC Founder Tom Biebighauser shares his expertise on wetland construction and design. Established in 2014, Wetland Restoration and Training LLC aims to encourage and assist people in building naturally appearing and functioning wetlands.

Learning and Innovation in Wetland Construction
Tom Biebighauser’s journey into wetland construction began with significant challenges. Many landowners and natural resource managers believed that building wetlands was nearly impossible and prohibitively expensive. Additionally, early techniques used for wetland construction had a success rate of less than 50%.
Starting his wetland-building career with the US Forest Service in Minnesota in 1979, Tom learned the ropes through trial and error. His initial projects faced numerous setbacks, with less than half of the early wetlands holding water as planned. However, through relentless work and innovation, Tom developed techniques that are now consistently 100% successful and cost-effective.
Tom’s innovative techniques for restoring wetlands and streams are designed to last forever without maintenance and to provide habitats for endangered and threatened species.
